Hotel MOCO/Udon Thaini, Thailand/Red Lotus Lake/How to travel Thailand in 2024
Red Lotus Lake in Udon Thani, Thailand.
It was literally a case of 'reality vs. Instagram' for me. It didn't amaze me at all.

Please check out this website. The Red Lotus Lake is a 'must-go' place, and it truly fascinated me when I explored the site. The image and imagination of the lake portrayed on the website perfectly matched the reality I envisioned.
The picture I took.
This visit turned out to be a significant disappointment. It's not that there was anything wrong with the website or the lake itself. The major letdown for me was the lack of sunshine. Unfortunately, I missed experiencing the lake on a sunny day, which, according to Google, is ideal between November and February. Despite being there at the end of January, I missed out on witnessing the sunrise from the water, supposedly the highlight. In any case, it just wasn't my day.
How to get to Red Lotus Lake
The lake isn't located near the hotel, so you'll need to take a taxi. However, to catch the sunrise – the lake's most breathtaking view – you should aim to arrive around 5:30 or 6 AM (depending on the season). Since the lake is a bit distant from the city center and an early departure is necessary, using Grab taxi may not be the most convenient option. Instead, I arranged a taxi through the hotel for a round trip at a cost of 40 USD. The journey took approximately 40 to 50 minutes by taxi. Don't forget to bring a jacket as the early morning can be quite cold.
I edited this video to the best of my bility that make it look great.
⇩ I flew to Udon Thani from Chiang Mai, and the flight took just under an hour.
I stayed at Hotel MOCO for a duration of 2 nights, and the cost was approximately 80 USD per night.
Hotel MOCO is a newly built establishment, completed in 2021. I believe it stands among the top hotels in Udon Thani. Conveniently situated in the city center, it is nestled in the heart of the local market. Central Udon Shopping Center is easily accessible with a brief 10-minute stroll, and the train station is just a 3-minute walk away.
The room I stayed in was a standard room, and it was impeccably clean and cozy. The bed was well-sized, and the fresh, white bedsheets added to the overall comfort – I loved it. The bathroom was spotless, and the amenities were neatly organized, providing everything one might need. I particularly admired the design of the amenity packages; they were simple yet fascinating. The closet was spacious, and there was a delightful coffee station with complimentary coffee sets. However, one downside was the hotel's proximity to a bustling food market with live music. It could get a bit loud, especially if you prefer a quiet environment at night.
I enjoyed a delightful coffee at this minimalist-style bar. While I don't consume alcohol, they offer excellent coffee. Consider making a visit before reaching Hotel MOCO. The coffee bar is conveniently located on the route from Udon Thani International Airport to the hotel.
In conclusion, Hotel MOCO stands out as the top choice for those seeking an elegant and luxurious stay in Udon Thani. While my visit lasted for two nights, I realized that a one-night stay would have sufficed, considering the limited attractions in the city. However, preferences vary, and it ultimately depends on what you are seeking. Looking ahead, I am eager to explore the Ethan area in Thailand during my next visit, and without a doubt, Hotel MOCO will be my go-to accommodation in Udon Thani.
